A SOFT LANDING

Julie had made a few dioramas for friends. The purpose of the dioramas was to remind the viewer about events in the past. It was intended to create an ambiance of warm nostalgia through these works. Artist, Julie Rall, made them out of cardboard and random craft supplies. The possibility of creating a large-scale work using the aesthetic principles of the intimate diorama fascinated me. For the installation, “A Soft Landing” in Building 5, Julie created a diorama that one can walk into.

“A Soft Landing" is a meditation on where we are. The installation is assembled with repurposed items including world globes and
an antique parachute.

An indoor performance space with a large, luminous fabric sculpture resembling an umbrella or jellyfish hanging from the ceiling, surrounded by colorful stage lights in pinks and purples. The floor has circular glowing markings and scattered circular cushions. The background shows an industrial-style interior with exposed wooden beams and electrical panels.
