Totter- “ move in a feeble or unsteady way” “ a person who makes a living by salvaging salable items from garbage cans and piles of waste” Totter is an exploration and challenge to be wholly present in my body, free and vulnerable with my narrative and to choreograph time, gravity and entropy through the meter of language. As 300 pounds of ice melts, my sculptural, fulcrum stance will shift, and as I slowly descend, a spontaneous and improvisational monologue will be spoken. There will be no script, but only a handful of prompts to prime the flow of language. The monologue will develop and grow organically and hopefully be free of hesitation, self censoring, and restrictive decorum. Prompts include – surviving to 60, white privilege, being married to a black man, farm boy stories, activism/apathy, art, fantasies, body as palimpsest, confessions, Midwest racism, potential stand-up material, narcissism, etc. The mercurial rate of melting ice does not allow for me to predict an accurate duration for the performance, but I estimate between 4 to 8 hours. As I descend, my movement will also trigger other surprise transformations and actions within the space.
